Free Artists

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Free Artists help creators?

Free-Artists allows creative projects to access resources (money, skills, audience) without having to give up an unfair portion of their future revenue streams and IP rights to their art. We help creators draw on their core fanbase (and others who share the Free Artists passion) to offer support in exchange for revenue & perks as the project is executed!

How does Free Artists help collaborators?

You get to become a part of the creative process and become co-owners for the projects you believe in from the beginning; supporting by sharing with your community, providing feedback or even joining the team. You get to vote/help make decisions and reap the benefits (perks, revenue, etc.) when the artist/project grows. You get to engage with communities that share your passion for film, music, etc., regardless of location or profession.

As you contribute money, skills, or your network into the project, you’ll receive a token that dictates your economic upside (financial returns/perks) depending on the terms set on the proposal. For example, a music label offers 15% of revenue (from streams, ticket sales, etc.) from their next 5 artists in exchange for $100k, e-commerce skill-set, and volume of referrals. After your contribution, you can engage with the creator and rest of the community as the project is executed.

You also get to participate in the Free-Artists community; reshaping how creative industries are run and using your personal experience to help guide us as we become owned by the community over the next few years. Imagine how a truly decentralized resourcing system would empower uncompromising art from every corner of the world.

Is Free-Artists structured as a DAO?

To start, Free-Artists is centralized to enable faster execution when building the platform. Over the next couple of years as the platform develops, Free-Artists plans to be owned by the community (what is a DAO?); enabling fans & communities to own & vote for decisions in this public utility. As a DAO, we aim to be a more fair and democratic corporate structure than the existing, maximally extractive, resourcing options in the creative industries.

How do I get the revenue & perks promised?

"How do I get the revenue & perks promised as a collaborator? How are the contracts enforced? Do I have any insurance if the artist fails to obtain revenue?”

TL;DR - we combine auditing systems with project transparency to provide protection to all stakeholders, including Free-Artists*.

How do I get the revenue & perks promised as a collaborator?

  • Auditing: Free-Artists conducts live quarterly audits - with a project's monthly bank statements, annual tax forms, and first-party data from relevant revenue sources (via PDFs & images). These audits are conducted live between a Free-Artists representative & the creator.
  • Public Visibility: Creative projects engage deeply in communities and are motivated to be transparent via project page updates, town halls, etc. Projects rely on their community to make projects succeed, so they're extra motivated to show accountability.

How are the contracts enforced?

  • Terms of Service: Every contributor joins the project as an active collaborator: once the budget is raised & the creator accesses the resources, the collaborator (you!) and the creator agrees to the terms of service (viewable in the footer below), where the collaborator agrees to leverage their network to help the creator drive more audience and revenue growth. Each fan has the ability to drive legal recourse if they feel the creative is committing fraud/scam.

*Free-Artists fees - to reinvest into building the platform, Free-Artists also earns a percentage of the revenues distributed back to the collaborators. While this eventually goes to the community as we become a DAO (!), it provides the platform with extra motivation to ensure the relevant revenue is collected and distributed.
